Haven't been very active here as of lately, or anywhere for that matter, except for working on that book, which should be done and wrapped up in a few months. I'll make a post with some pages from the book when the time is ripe.

Julia Rothman contacted me some time ago about making an illustration for a book being published by Chronicle Books in the fall of 2012, by the name of; The Where, The What and The How: 75 Artists Illustrate the Wondrous Mysteries of the Universe.
My mystery was: What caused the extinction of the Neanderthals?

Here's a two page comic I did together with the fabulous Julian Gough for Nobrow's Double issue, out about now I guess.

And here's a little something to fill up an otherwise pretty thin blog post, a collection of sketches and designs from the making of Obsolete. The guys at Nobrow made me put this together for their website, but never really considered posting them here for some reason. Sorry about the small sizes, but it's all I got since my computer died a while back.

Here's an illustration for the brilliant Scottish poet Ross Sutherland's upcoming E-book, which will contain a sonnet for each of the Street Fighter II characters, as well as illustrations. I didn't have a choice of character, since all of them were already drawn except Guile, but had lots of fun with this one. And I missed ink and brush.
I'll update you further on when the collection of poems are released, will most likely be early November.

Haven't posted anything in a while. Too much thinking and too less drawing. Been completely and obsessively absorbed in figuring out this immense project in front of me. I certainly didn't think it would be easy to do a 140 page comic in colors from another persons script, but for a perfectionist and a creative control freak, this whole thing has been, and is, a sandwich way to big to gape over—I gotta learn the art of nibbling.

Sorry about the lack of posting, I've been spending all my working hours doing thumbnails and planning colors for the new comic I'm working on. 140 pages, lots of environments and strong emotions, a big challenge. I got past the stage where I was too intimidated to do anything at all, my brain hurting from speculating too much, as when you would ponder on paradoxes in time-traveling and get lost.

This drawing has no relevance whatsoever, but lightens the otherwise heavy mood of the post by several ounces.

Back to relative reality. Here's a couple of tests, not on the style itself, more on the technique and the tools. I keep thinking I should stop doing all these tests and just draw, but how else would I find out how to draw anything without regretting it half-way through a book, right?

Testing out the coloring technique. It has to look crisp, but not take up too much time. I have to finish the whole comic in November, so I don't have too much time for knobbing about. Don't know if it's too time-consuming to color the outlines of things, it's just a habit now, I feel that nothing really looks finished before I do that. It's easy with one character, with no background, but most likely something completely different when you got big crowds, complex backgrounds and weather effects.

Synopsis:

Neglected by the government and with no heroic memories or loving family members to return to, the two weary soldiers seek solace in alcohol, drug and nihilistic hedonism. Constantly haunted by nightmares of their recent tumultuous pasts, they desperately struggle to stay on the surface of reality.

In front of a bank in Utah, armed and emotionally numbed, they step out of a Ford Maverick. For what would feel like a split second, in the middle of their final self-annihilating act, one of them sees something he had never envisioned; an awakening?

It's been a while since I've posted anything, so here's a bit of this and a bit of that.
I wrote in an earlier post about the 24 paged comic 'Obsolete', which I've been working on for Nobrow Press for some time now. Well, it's all done and polished now and will be published in April. I'll do a post about it then, and add some of the pages.

Why is it so horridly difficult to decide even the smallest of things? I certainly hope that some of the artists I admire out there are as indecisive as me sometimes, cos that would really reassure me.

Here's a selection of some single page stories I worked on for the Danish book 'Pære-Perker-Dansk' which includes 9 short stories about immigrants, being an immigrant, feeling like you don't fit in, trying to fit in and prejudice in general. So, it would seem that the last post I did here was on the 25th of December. Quite a little chunk of time, huh? A lot of stuff has happened during the last three months. After dropping out of animation school I got accepted into the design school, that didn't feel right, so dropped out of that one too. Started freelancing (barely) roughly three months ago. Had a long time where I didn't really draw anything. I didn't feel like it at all, it scared me a bit, but I got over it again. Been working for a creative company the last couple of months drawing (supposedly) funny fruit illustrations used for advertising. Got some really cool comic gigs recently that I've been spending most of my energy on. Three of them are solo projects while the last one is for an anthology featuring sprouting folks in danish comics.
For the danish readers out there (and for those who might swing by here for some reason) there's the biannual comic book festival here in Copenhagen between the 21st and the 23rd of May. I will have my first published work there, and will be signing and sketching in a stand two of the days for a couple of hours, and will most likely hang around there all the time like a sweaty little nerd.

Here's the cover of one of the comics I made for the festival. It's quite small, 13 x 13 cm, 22 pages in b/w. I had a high fever when I made it so it's even stranger than my regular work.

a short comic

Here's a short comic I finished two days ago. At the moment, I'm trying to practice more on making comics than drawing illustrations. Though it's practically the same thing, drawing comics just seems much tougher. I tend to play (mess) around with the design and the look for way too much time, and end up not finishing it, because of the pressure put on me by no one but myself.
So I challenged myself, which always is a good thing to do. Drawing in your safe zone feels really good, but you don't really move anywhere.
So what I did was, I gave myself half an hour to come up with a story and write it down. Then, with some two inch thumbnails and no detailed sketches, I had to draw the six pages in one evening. And then another evening to color the whole thing.

Here's the lines first. Trying to keep it a little loose and simple and not to think too much.

And here's the colors without the lines. Trying again to keep it simple and working more in flats.

And here's the final comic.

Hey again. Trying to figure out what I'm doing at the moment when it comes to drawing. The style, the lines, the colors... so many choices and I'm one of those people who can't really decide anything.

Here's a little something I did to prepare myself for possible future jobs in newspapers. A politician, their queen, another politician, some lame rapper and finally, the Antichrist.

I've written a short comic about to brothers to practice on my storytelling. Trying hard to figure out the look. Feels like I might have hit something right here.

two of my good friends and me made a short animated film a couple of weeks ago. Here it is http://www.vimeo.com/5109510. We had a week to do pre-production and then 4 days to do around 35 seconds of finished animation. My focus was on the storyboard, the character design, the color palettes, the backgrounds and the cleanup. The other two guys did all the animation, recorded the sounds, edited the film and all the rest of the finishing touch-ups.

I had a fun time doing the research and practicing drawing like a kid. My mom found these really old and dried up crayons I had as a kid, so they were probably somewhere around 18 years old.

I visited a sassy buddy of mine two weeks ago. Real late one night we decided we should do some drawing instead of just sitting around eating nuts and playing guitarhero (even though those things are pretty rad as well). So we decided on doing a little comic jam. To find the themes we went to wikipedia and pressed random article twice each and those were our themes. My first theme was Cerro El Potosí, one of the highest mountains in northeast Mexico. And my second theme was some random jewish sitcom.
We only had around 3 hours to come up with a story, write the dialogs, do the layouts and sketch it as tightly as we could. It's just been laying around and I've only just recently cleaned it up and put some color on it. There's still some stuff I might change, perhaps the font.

This week I had a short two days course in color theory using paint. I haven't painted much before, but it's something I've always wanted to do. And I guess that one of the things that threw me off about it, was the fact that you actually had to mix every single color yourself. And when you've used photoshop for a while, where color picking is like using the toilet and you always have adjustments and filters if you fuck things up, you easily get really lazy.
In the end of the second day we had to copy a painting in about 2 or 3 hours using a big brush and focusing on the colors and not on the objects. This is far from done, but I ran out of time.

Just playing around with shading techniques on an old drawing of one of my all time favorite russians.

Here's the quick groundwork, done with a lasso.

Then I went over to painter and played around with some tool that I can't really remember.

Since it's just a test there aren't really any final version, but this one I really like as well. This was done in photoshop with some fancy brush I made.

I was in Lawrence Marvit's design class a couple of weeks ago and it was hard on the brains. There we dealt with value (in grayscale), space, texture and sculptural form.

One of the first assignments was to sculpt a sea-monster with pencil or photoshop making it as dynamic as we could.

Then we did a romantic scene in a junkyard, building up an atmospheric feel by stacking values and to make it interesting spatially.
Lines was actually kind of a no no in this assignment but I find it really hard working with only shapes and no borders.

This weeks theme in my class is cannibals and this is what I came up with. Sort of a cliché really but what the shiz. I wanted a mignolaish sort of feel to it without it being too fanartsy, and I think I achieved it. This only took a couple of hours but thats probably because I didn't have to worry about the background or colored shadows.

Here's the first one I did. This was way to cliché and character focused, but I kinda like the look of it anyhow.

We recently had a couple of weeks of doing walks.

Here's the pink panther in a ''normal'' walk. The tail is a little wonky.

This is another drawing for my class theme jam. This was the week before last weeks theme, fungus party. I got stuck in the middle, but finally finished today.

here's the first try...which is where I got stuck. I've never done a piece with so many characters in it at once and I ended up given every single thing an individual color which is just a pain! I ended up with these colors and thought they where way to awkward and a little all over the place.

We recently started a weekly drawing jam in my class and I'm a little behind:I ..this was last weeks theme: scrap vehicles.

I did a rougher sketch before this one with blue pencils, but since it's almost the same I didn't bother posting it.

30 days of animation

Around a month ago I started animation school and since I just created this blog yesterday I've posted a selected bunch of animation tests I did over the last couple of weeks.

Here we have one of the first bouncing balls I did, learning about weight and spacing.

Here's another bouncing ball...or rather balloon. Again to learn about weight and timing.

The seaweed assignment is pretty boring but very important.

So this was the first time we had an opportunity to try out ideas and experiment a little with a ball that's more alive.

And last, but not least, we did the good old frog and fly. Though with our own character design and story.
